Ken Speake

For 35 years Ken learned and practiced the craft of storytelling on television.  He didn’t go after awards, but won a bunch just the same.   He also didn’t much care for “standups” in which the all-knowing reporter says something profound on camera.  But the National Association of Television Programming Executives awarded him an Iris for on-camera talent, only one of which they award each year.  Ken’s stories on KARE 11 TV let folks know in 90 seconds or so, how people were dealing with what life threw at them.  He found passion in cleaning sewers.  He showed the spirituality of raising gladiolas. He gloried in the challenges and rewards folks found in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness… how they carried on in the face of tragedy.  He learned to listen… to what a person is not saying… to the actions and gestures a person uses to modify his or her words… to the quieter sounds that add the spice to this life we live.  He sought the great truths of life, and helped others understand, again, how folks handled what life threw at them

Storytelling: Good storytelling changes lives!  A young woman became a kick boxer,  bought a gym, and became a boxing promoter, she says, because of a story I told on TV.  A farmer made it through a one of the toughest summers of his life, he says, because of TV news stories I told about hard times on the farm. Businesses increasingly use storytelling to educate employees, suppliers and consumers.  Health care organizations find that patients respond better when effective storytelling is included in their treatment. People are enriched by good storytelling.  See good stories, learn how to tell good stories, and get an idea of how to apply storytelling to your situation.

Core Values:  What umpteen years as a TV reporter taught me about how folks live their values. A discussion of the passions that drive folks and the rewards their passions provide.  Includes inspiring video examples

Storytelling:  How I survived TV news and became a legend (What, you’ve never heard of me?)  A discussion of the basics and not-so-basics of using video to tell stories on television and on the Internet.  Includes instructional video samples

West Nile Virus:  A disease most folks don’t notice, kills a few.  Then there’s me. It changed my life.

Testimonials:

“One of the best local storytellers I know is retiring today.  I am taking the unusual step of dedicating the entire column to him because he has so much to teach us all about video storytelling.  Those of you in the print and online worlds who are trying to learn multimedia, draw near.  Here is a guy who can teach you something.”
-Al Tompkins, “Al’s Morning Meeting” The Poynter Institute.

“Ken’s success comes at breaking the rules.  His big, booming presence goes home as Gentle Ben with a heart as big as his immense hands.”
-Tom Lindner, Vice President and News Director, KARE 11 TV

“We have a lot of seasoned journalists come through and talk to our students. Ken stands head and shoulders above the pack because he is all about stories — not writing, not ego, not how I beat the other guy to this source, how I toppled the politician, saved the world, or won a prize.”
-Mindy McAdams, Online Journalism Professor , University of Florida.

“The Redwood Area Hospital brought Mr. Speake to Redwood Falls this past summer (August, 2007) to talk about his experience with West Nile Virus.  He shared his story, along with his wife Donna, and together they gave our audience a real look as to what it was like from the onset of his disease to the present. Ken brought video clips to show the disease progression and how it affected him, Donna spoke of things Ken didn't even recall happening when he was sick and in the hospital and leading up to being hospitalized.  The two of them provided a good picture of the effects the disease not only has on an individual but to the family unit.

Mr. Speake drew members of the audience to our presentation from his wonderful work at KARE 11 as well as because of his disease.  It made it much easier to market this event to our community.
-Shelly Pauling, Education and Communication Manager, Redwood Falls Area Hospital, Redwood Falls, Minnesota
